How do I create a website?

There are several ways to create a website. First you should consider whether you want a static HTML site or use a dynamic web application such as Wordpress for blogs, Joomla for content management or ZenCart for a shopping cart.

Static websites are great for small websites that don't need the dynamic technologies. Good static sites are lightweight, fast loading and use search engine optimization. In some ways they are simpler to make, manage and optimize for search engines. They can be coded by hand or with an editor.

Dynamic sites require use of more resources such as databases, but they also allow easy content updates with little to no coding knowledge. While the actual coding part of the site is much more complicated than a static site, dynamic sites allow a website owner to log into the web application and make content updates.

If you want to make a static site you have several options:

  • learn a little HTML and CSS and hand-code the site yourself - It's painstaking, but knowing how is a very valuable skill.
  • use an HTML editor to create the pages - It's still good to have a little background in HTML to clean code and troubleshoot.
  • hire a deisgner to create your site - Designers usually know how to do very clean code and optimize for search engines.

If you want a dynamic site here are some options:

  • Choose a web application, install it on your site and use a premade template
  • Hire a designer to create a custom template for the web application of your choice
  • Hire a programmer to build a custom web application

Now you know some of the options available for creating your website. For more details on how to create pages using the various options, see more articles in this Knowledgebase.
